Iran Warns of Retaliation Over European Sanctions
(MENAFN) Iran issued a warning on Monday, promising a “proportionate and appropriate response” if European parties to the 2015 nuclear accord chose to reintroduce UN sanctions through the mechanism known as “snapback.”
During a press briefing in Tehran, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei strongly criticized the latest threats from Britain, France, and Germany to trigger the “snapback” process.
This mechanism, linked to the UN Security Council’s Resolution 2231, could lead to renewed sanctions on Iran.
Baqaei labeled the stance taken by the European nations as “a political act and in opposition to the Islamic Republic.”
He emphasized that such actions “will be met with a proportionate and appropriate response,” according to remarks published by an Iranian official news agency.
The snapback clause permits the return of sanctions that were previously lifted under the 2015 nuclear agreement, should Iran be found in violation of its nuclear-related obligations.
However, Baqaei argued that recent assaults on Iran’s nuclear infrastructure by the United States and Israel had severely weakened both the legal and political foundation of the snapback provision.
He stated, “Resorting to this mechanism lacks any legal, political, or moral justification,” and further accused the European parties of misusing the clause as a means to circumvent their primary responsibilities under the deal.
He reaffirmed that Iran has remained loyal to the terms of the agreement, despite what he described as “gross violations” by both the US and European nations.
According to Baqaei, Iran “was forced to gradually reduce its commitments, a right that was foreseen in the text of the deal, in response to the gross violations by the United States and European parties.”
