Former British Soldier Denied Bail in Kenyan Murder Case
Robert James Purkiss, 38, has remained in custody since his arrest earlier this month by the UK National Crime Agency in Tidworth, Wiltshire, following the issuance of an arrest warrant by Kenyan authorities in September.
During proceedings at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Monday, where Purkiss faces extradition hearings, prosecutors revealed that he admitted to at least one fellow soldier that he killed Agnes Wanjiru in March 2012.
Wanjiru, who was 21 and the mother of a five-month-old infant, was discovered in a septic tank near the Lions Court Hotel in Nanyuki, the town hosting the British Army Training Unit Kenya (BATUK).
Reports indicate she had spent the evening partying with British soldiers, and a postmortem revealed a stab wound along with other injuries.
Joel Smith, a lawyer representing Kenyan prosecutors, told a news agency that Purkiss allegedly showed one soldier the septic tank where Wanjiru’s body was later found and subsequently admitted to another soldier that he killed her following “sex that went wrong.”
Purkiss, however, “vehemently denies” the allegations and has received financial assistance from Britain’s Ministry of Defense for his legal representation, according to British media reports.
Last week, the ex-soldier told a media outlet that he “did not kill Agnes Wanjiru.”
