European Nations Urge Iran to Respect Fundamental Rights of Citizens
The UK, France, and Germany released a unified statement expressing alarm over escalating violence. "We are deeply concerned about reports of violence by Iranian security forces, and strongly condemn the killing of protestors," the joint declaration stated. "The Iranian authorities have the responsibility to protect their own population and must allow for the freedom of expression and peaceful assembly without fear of reprisal. We urge the Iranian authorities to exercise restraint, to refrain from violence, and to uphold the fundamental rights of Iran's citizens."
Unrest ignited December 28 at Tehran's Grand Bazaar—the commercial epicenter of Iran's capital—triggered by the rial's dramatic plunge and mounting economic hardship. The demonstrations rapidly expanded beyond the capital, engulfing multiple cities nationwide.
Tehran has remained silent on official death tolls, but the Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) reported Wednesday that fatalities have reached at least 38, including four security personnel.
The activist organization documented additional casualties: dozens wounded and 2,217 detained.
Thursday's clashes in Kermanshah, a western city, proved particularly lethal for security forces. Media outlets reported eight members of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) were killed during confrontations.
Al Jazeera broke the news Friday via X (formerly Twitter), the US social media platform, attributing the information to a news agency.
